Plasma Rifles and Cover

Q: Target unit, Grunt, is currently occupying a covered bunker with a firing slit (mostly obscured). Attacker unit, Plasma Gunner, fires at the zone which he can see the outside corner of the zone. According to the rules (please correct me if I am wrong), since a plasma gun damages all units in the zone, whether in or out of the bunker, Grunt will get no bonus from being inside the bunker. Is this correct?

A: That is correct. As long as the Plasma gunner can see any part of the 3 inch cube that is the zone, even the grunt's beady little eyes through the tiny bunker slit, he can target him and the target gets no cover.

Whirling Dervishes

Q: A dervish grenade lands in a zone, inflicts damage to the occupants, and the following turn starts its rampage of terror in random directions. What happens when it meets a wall or other immovable object? Does it crash? Is it proximity guided to avoid such objects? If so, can it go through windows to attack objects inside buildings? Please clarify.

A: A dervish hovers, like all smart grenades. If it reaches a wall, it will go over it. There is no limitation for vertical movement. If there is any kind of hole in the wall, it can go through it and attack things inside. If it has a choice (example over versus through) roll randomly to determine which level it ravages. Assign an equal chance for each option, roll, and apply the results. Any dervishes moving off the table are out of the game.

Grenades and Cover

Q: A grenade (standard, plasma, energy) lands in a zone and detonates. There are two units in the zone, grunt and sniper. Grunt is outside a covered bunker (no cover) and Sniper is inside the covered bunker (mostly obscured, but still in the zone). Can the grenade land in the bunker (through the firing slit) or does it have to land outside? The standard target number for a grenade is six. Does Sniper get a bonus for being in a bunker from the explosion? As I see it, the grenade detonates and the TN to hit Sniper (mostly obscured) is nine while grunt is the standard six. Is this correct?

A: I'll grant you, this is a tough one. The rules clearly state on page 26 that no tactical factors (such as cover) apply to the grenade attack, so the sniper does NOT get cover. So the question becomes one of whether the gladiator in the bunker is an eligible target or not. Fragmentation and Sub-Munition grenades: In order to be eligible, the grenade needs a line of fire to the target. If you have set up your terrain such that the slit runs along the boundary of two zones, then the sniper is safe because the grenade blast cannot get at him. If, however, you set it up such that the sniper, the opening in the bunker and open space outside are all in the same zone, then the grenade CAN go off essential AT the slit and get them both. There is a lesson here to be learned in setting up your terrain. It is assumed the grenades go off in the air at the top of the zone, and rain down on the targets below. If a target has full overhead protection, with no bits sticking out, it is probably not eligible. If this full overhead protection does not cover the entire zone, as in the above bunker example, you may want to roll randomly to see if it detonated over the cover or not. If it detonated over the cover, the gladiator is not an eligible target. Energy and plasma grenades: These types absolutely fill the zones in which they detonate, with no hope of cover, unless the target is in an area totally sealed off from the blast.

Grenades and Cover II

Q: What happens when the bunker is not covered? How is it determined where the grenade lands (inside or outside the bunker)? Does the unit on the other side of wall get a benefit from the protection?

A: This one is easier. The grenade goes off above the wall and gets them both, no cover. The only exception to this would be if the wall was higher than 3" (one "zone" high), in which case you should roll randomly to decide on which side it lands. Again, much grief can be avoided by careful placement of terrain.
